TEACHING SYSTEM

SMAN 10 is one of the known best schools. Indeed, learners show an attitude of responsibility, caring, responsive, and politeness as part of the solution to various problems in interacting effectively with the social and natural environment.  Learners have the competence to understand, implement and analyze the factual knowledge, the conceptual knowledge, and the  procedural knowledge.

Learning load is encapsulated per subject where one hour of learning is equal to 45 minutes used by both the learners and the teacher. .In 1 week, time spent differs in different grade levels.  42 hours for class X, and 44 hours for class XI and class XII. However, for science subjects, 2 hours is used which is equivalent to 90 minutes. Class starts at 6:45 and ends at 3:oo p.m., unless, there are remedials or activities to be done, the dismissal depends upon the teacher

-CURRICULUM-

"K-12 Curriculum: the methodology of education will no longer be teaching for the sake of passing but a thorough education that takes into account social skills, temperament, character, love of Indonesian culture"

History curriculum in Indonesia is often changed every turn of the Minister of Education, so that the quality of education in Indonesia has yet to meet the quality standards are clear and steady. In the course of history since 1945, the national education curriculum has changed, namely in 1947, 1952, 1964, 1968, 1975, 1984, 1994, 2004, and 2006.

The curriculum was changed from 1947 to become curriculum 2013. This is in accordance with the demands. Where in the curriculum in 2013 applying the methodology of education will no longer be teaching for the sake of passing but a thorough education that takes into account social skills, temperament, character, love of Indonesian culture.

-TEACHING PLAN (Physics)-

Attached at the left side is one of the lesson plans that I have taught during my practicum at SMAN10. The format is different from what we are using in the Philippines. Learning objectives’ table is separated from the procedures as well as the subject matter. However, similarity is seen in the learning activities' table, wherein, there are teacher’s activity and learner’s activities.

Teaching Methods

In the implementation of activities, teachers should select and use strategies that engage students actively in learning, both mentally, physically, and socially.  In teaching a subject, it should be tailored to the peculiarities of the concept / topic and the development of students' thinking, so that there will be a harmony between teaching that emphasizes understanding of concepts and  problem-solving skills. Teaching from the concrete to the abstract , from the easy to the difficult and from the simple to the complex is also encouraged.

LEARNING MATERIALS AND INNOVATION

Books from the library are being used both by the teachers and students which makes the library as one of the effective learning materials. Materials are provided for dry experiments, however, to make the concept more understandable and meaningful  to students, I am encouraged by my mentor  to make my own instructional materials. As for laboratory experiments, apparatuses are completely provided.

Home: About

SOURCES OF LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY

Internet and books from libraries are provided by the school. All students can conveniently access the internet for each class room is installed with internet connection. Since science includes experimentations, students are required to go to laboratories to conduct experiments as to do the hands-on learning which is the experimental method.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT

For assessment, I observe that writing test, oral test (reporting) and assignments are frequently used by my mentors. Sometimes, students are grouped and sometimes it is an individual activity. Unit test is also done after the discussion of all the chapters in a unit.

CURRICULUM

Education should not only develop        cognitive (knowledge) solely but also must develop affective (attitude) and psychomotor (thinking skill / skills) in holistic, Changes in the learning process of the students told a student to figure out and process-based assessment of the output into output-based processes and require additional hours of lessons. This is the also the kind of curriculum being applied in SMA10--- the K-12 currculum.

-OBSERVATION ON TEACHERS-

PLANNING FOR TEACHING

I have observed most of the time that my mentor, goes 5-15 minutes earlier during laboratory experiments. This is to prepare the set-up of the experiment of the day and the apparatuses that will be used by the students. I had the chance to assist my mentor in Chemistry and what we did was to have the materials be readied for the all of the groups to use. He always read and explains to me the procedure of the experiment 30 minutes before the time for us to ready ourselves.

Home: About

PREPARING LESSONS AND MATERIALS

My mentor in Physics already has her lesson plans in her laptop. All she needs to do is to review it and prepare the materials needed for teaching the lessons. We scan the topics a week or 3 days before the day of teaching for us, specially, me, to prepare.

I, when teaching, use the projector for my power point presentation. For my materials, I make sure that I always have my instructional materials to use. Due to this, I am preparing my materials 1-3 days before my teaching.

(The picture at the right is a set up of the current-producing-cassava experiment which is already prepared by my mentor, Bu Des, half an hour before the class starts)

TEACHING IN CLASS

Since Physics is a “solving-problem subject”, my mentor always discuss and solve some problems first and let her students also try to solve some problems. After which, my mentor would always discuss the answers and ask everybody to check their papers. Motivation is also used by my mentor. It is done either by letting the students watch a short film about the topic, a game or an activity that will drive the students to the lesson of the day. I am then encouraged to do so because motivation activity catches the attention of the learners.

Home: Bio

MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION

During the lessons which entails problem-solving activities, my mentor always let her students to also try it themselves. This is done at the middle or at the end part of the lesson, an activity is always given to the students. If not, students are given assignments and homeworks to be checked the next meeting.

TEACHING PRACTICE

PROCEDURES OF TEACHING

In SMA10, I am assigned to two mentors and given two subjects to teach---Physics and Chemistry. This is because I am majoring in Physical Sciences. One thing I have known is that students of Teacher Education in UNP are only majoring in one particular subject. They were surprised when I told them that my major covers the three; Physics; Chemistry; and Environmental Sciences. This requires me to be at the school every day.

I am teaching all class levels which are grade 10, 11 and 12. I teach 2 hours at least, and 5 hours at maximum, a day. At the start of the period, I always greet my students, “good morning!’ and check their attendance. Then, I always integrate a motivational activity or a game before our lesson which I have witnessed, is effective because they are really much more motivated to learn. I discussed concepts and applications first, solve some problems on the board and let students show their solutions on the board, as well. Afterwards, I give them a 5-item quiz as part of my assessment. I always ask someone to share before the class the things we have learned in that particular meeting as my generalization. Then, I end the meeting through saying, “Goodbye and thank you class. See you again next time!"

IMG_6896_edited.jpg

TIME MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZING OF ACTIVITIES

In one meeting, 2 hours which is equivalent to 90 minutes is allotted for their Science subject. When I teach, I am using the first 10 minutes to prepare everything that I will be using in my teaching that includes the materials, the laptop and the projector, and other things. Then, I use the another 10-15 minutes for my motivational activity. This is followed by a 40-minute discussion and recitation. 15 minutes is for their assessment and the last 10 minutes will be for wrapping up or summarizing of what we have discussed on that meeting.

For laboratory meetings, the first 20 minutes is for the discussion of the laboratory procedures. And the remaining time will be for experimentation. Cleaning and fixing the apparatuses is done 10 or 5 minutes before the time.

Home: About

PROBLEM-SOLVING

Whenever there are problems, may it be simple or complex, I always let my mentor know it. For instance, when the projector is not working, I do not hesitate to tell it to my mentor for it to be addressed right away rather than me teaching out of plan. However, in my whole stay, I have not encountered big problems inside the class room.

fullsizeoutput_24a7.jpeg

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Honestly, it is not difficult for me to get their attention since they are all listening and they are all showing their respect, specially, when their teacher is speaking in front. It is just that there are times that I need to call their attention for they cannot notice that the class is getting noisy. However, what I do every time is to check if they are seated on their proper seats. Also, I roam around the class room when discussing as for them to know that I can see whether they are doing something or not.

SUMMARY AND SUGGESTIONS

PURPOSES FOR PRACTICUM

This practicum program allows me to have a glimpse on the educational system of other country, specifically, Padang City, West Sumatra, Indonesia. It brings me to the actual world of teaching and strengthens me for it allows me to face my soon-to-be profession. It gives me bullets of skills and preparations for me to use my gun when I am already in the real field of teaching. Through this, bridges are made from Philippines to Indonesia and to Thailand. Generally, I can say that this helps me develop my cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills and how to teach these, as well.

PROCEDURES OF PRACTICUM

We had our orientation in the first week of our stay. Then, on the second week, we were introduced to the rector and we were brought in our own assigned schools. The second week was also the week when we were deployed. Firstly, I observed and assist my teacher, then, on the third day of my stay in school, I was already asked to teach both Chemistry and Physics subject. And on my last week, I was evaluated by my mentor and supervising instructor.

OUTCOMES OF PRACTICUM

This practicum program allows pre-service teachers to apply and improve their communication through English language. Strategies and Techniques through discovery are being applied and tested. Cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills are being honed and are a preparation for the future profession. Through this, cultures are being shared, experiences are being created and othetr educational systems are being learned.

THE CHALLENGES OF PRACTICUM

How to make sure that learners have understood what has been taught is one the major challenges I had. Because not all students can speak in English, it is on my part on how to find remedy for this. What I do is to always put the translation of my presentation so as for them to have a clue on what I am to talk about. Also, being in a new environment is a challenge so I need to adapt and adjust to what should be done when in Padang.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FUTURE IMPROVEMENT

Indeed, this program gives a wonderful and meaningful experience to pre-service teachers to enhance their teaching skills and abilities. This would really be a lot better if there would be more countries joining so as to create bridges with each other and to train many pre-service teachers to be globally competitive individuals. With regards to the online general orientation before we went out of our country, we really cannot understand each other and we cannot understand what the facilitator was saying. Maybe this is due to the internet connection. So, if there would be another way how to conduct this activity, it would be much better. With regards to span of stay, a month, from my experience, is not enough. This is because I had to make all things fast. However, even though it is just a month, it was already a memorable experience!

OVERALL IMPRESSION

I just felt so privileged that I am part of this student-exchange program! The experiences that I created, the bonds that I had with our new friends and mentors, and the culture I have witnessed are one of the best things and the highlights in my life! I really consider myself lucky for I was given the opportunity to teach in other country--- Indonesia! I can say that I have improved my communication through English and that I am getting much more prepared because of this program! Overall, it is a very wonderful and non-regrettable experience!

-WEEK 1-

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step"
-Lao Tzu

Excited. Nervous. Happy. Sad. An unexplainable mixture of emotions. This is what I felt at this day- my day of travel. Today, words of encouragement, support, prayer and love from my families and friends are one of the things I had with me in going to my destination. Being out-of-the-country really gives me the feeling of fun, and at the same time, a feeling of sadness. Maybe, due to the thought that I am to miss all  people and things in the Philippines... I will surely do.

10:00 a.m. Monday. July 30, 2018. I, and my companion, Jafet, his mom and his friend arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and we got ready for our flight. We roam around, had our lunch and hanged out a bit. At exactly 2:30 p.m., we gave our goodbyes and hugs to Jafet’s mom and friend, then, we went into the airport to check-in. We talked to the immigration, let our baggage be scanned, and finished other requirements in the airport. At around 3:30 p.m., having passed the immigration and all, there we are now, waited for our plane to arrive. And at 5:00, we are already on board.

Riding a plane and seeing the views on top of the sky is one of the best experiences I had in life. I am overwhelmed by the sea of clouds, larger view of the ocean and land, and the feeling that this is really happening.  Few hours after our take-off, one of the crews announced that we will be having a game in celebration of their airline’s 10thtime to be awarded as the best. Questions were asked, and if you are lucky, you will be getting a prize. There were only three questions to be answered by three lucky individuals and fortunately, I was the 3rdperson to answer the question correctly. The crew let me introduced myself, of what school I am from and they ask me on what can I do for them. I told them that I can sing since I am comfortable in doing it. When I started to sing, most of them were clapping and videoing, which makes my heart really feel big. It also gives me the feeling of pride of being a Filipino. This is one of the highlights of my first trip.

Having arrived at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I and Jafet can’t explain the excitement we we felt. We consider ourselves lucky for stepping in Malaysia even if it is just for hours.  After 1 hour and 15 minutes, finally, we arrived at Minangkabau International airport! Ms. Nola together with her colleagues, which I thought were our buddy, fetched us in the airport. It is overwhelming since they are very welcoming. They drove us to one of Padang restaurants and have us eat our first food in Padang which is named ‘lontong’. After eating, we went to the university, meet some of the faculties and went to our house. There, we met our buddies. We talked with each other, exchange Instagram accounts and eat together. It is really a happy and amazing first day in Padang!

On the third day, I woke up at around 8 a.m. Ms. Sinta, one of our buddies, came into our dorm at around 6:30 a.m.  and accompanied us having our breakfast. Mr. Jakastria , my buddy, followed us into the restaurant and had a breakfast together. After eating, we had the chance to roam around the corner of Universitas Negeri Padang. It is a long walk since the school’s vicinity is too wide. Really, this is an opportunity for us to take a glimpse of the school. We have seen separate buildings for each major which amazed us more!

We went home at around 5 p.m. and we, from Philippines and Thailand, cooked our own cuisines and let others try it. After eating our dinner, we enjoyed the night through playing games from the Philipines such as ‘concentration’, completing of A-B-C , and ‘truth or dare’…

WEEK 2

We are being introduced one by one in front of the new freshmen students by the president, himself, at the UNP auditorium. And so, we had the chance to meet the president and some of the administrators of the school and took pictures together. After which, Mr. Ananda brought us to our assigned schools. I was assigned to SMA 10. It is quite far since they told me that I will be riding an ‘angkot’ from home to UNP and from UNP, I should take a ‘trans Padang’ going to my school. Having arrived at the school where I am assigned to, I had met my mentor, Ma’am Des, a physics teacher. She really can’t speak English that good but the cute thing is, she is trying her best to say what she wants to say in English. She roamed me around for me to see and familiarize the facilities they have in SMA10.

Tuesday morning, I woke up at 5 a.m. I took a bath, ironed my uniforms and ate breakfast. At around 6 am, Mr. Wendi, one of our buddies accompanied me in going to school. He taught me how to go to school using ‘angkot’ and ‘trans Padang’. When I arrived at school, I went directly to my mentor. She gave me the curriculum and the lesson plan which I will be needing in my teaching next week. At 10:30 a.m., I went to join the classes of Ma’am Des, to observe. I introduced myself and I just loved how students were being entertained by my background.

Since, the school classes end early, Mr. Jakastria Warman, one of my buddies took me to Andalas University, one of the widest universities in South-East Asia.  I was in awe when I saw how beautiful the buildings were built and how green the environment was because of the mountain and trees! Wow- is the only word I can say at that time. Going home, I learned how to drive the motorcycle and I did! This gives me another achievement for myself. What a beautiful Tuesday!

This week, I tried to go to school alone. I rode an ‘angkot’. I rode a ‘trans Padang’. And yehey! I made it! I was able to arrive at school and on time. How overwhelming it is when everyone responds to me when I greet them ‘Selamat Pagi! I went to Ma’am Des and told her that I should have at least 20-hour teaching session. Because of this, she assigned me to one of the chemistry teachers, Mr. Em. I also entered Mr. Em’s classes and observed. Luckily, he gave me the chance to assist him in his laboratory class. I observed that students are very respectful to their teachers.

For our excursion, we were brought to Pagaruyuang Palace going to Bukititinggi, West Sumatera to see “Lobang Jepang” which is one of the tourist spots in the place.

THIRD WEEK

Monday. I was introduced by the administrators of SMAN10 to all the students in the school. I had the chance to talk in front of the students. I also had the chance to teach every day. I had tried to manipulate and try their laboratory apparatus, as well.  I had known my students more. I had the chance to eat with them and talk to them.

For our excursion, we were brought to the "Netherland" of West Sumatra and we tried to walk in a hanging bridge and ziplined.

FOURTH WEEK

This is my last week. It is in this week that I had my rated demonstration. Fortunately, I was able to deliver it well. My students gave me their personal letters and I gave my message for them, too. Also it is in this week when we had our cultural night. I and my companion Jaffet, had the chance to showcase our culture and talent. We showed a traditional dance called “kanyao” and we sung a traditional song from Kalinga. We had to say our goodbyes to our friends, mentors and to all who were there during our stay. This is the week where I had to go home. I gave my goodbyes to my students as well as my teachers and the administrators. Really, this is the most emotional week for us.

For our last excursion we were brought to Carocok Island, one of the islands which has a beautiful beach in West Sumatera.
